Effective SMART Board instruction involves many aspects:
1. finding different ways to help students understand an idea through color, shape, movement, video and even placement on the screen
2. bringing in resources that show students a concept such as a video or virtual manipulative
3. allowing students to show what they know uniquely
4. get to a deeper level of understanding
5. finding a way to "see" and "document" student thinking

There are 5 keys to effective SMART Board use. They are:

1. Interactive - Students are touching the SMART Board and manipulating elements in the lesson
2. Engaging - The lesson keeps the students involved in the learning throughout the entire time.
3. Content - Directly related to curriculum/learning targets/intervention
4. Questioning - The question gets students to think at higher levels. It is open ended to allow for multiple ways for expression or understanding.
5. Design - The way the information is presented is easy to understand, helps students understand or is presented in different ways to reach different students.

1. Change the background and font color so that the information is easier to read. Some students process information with contrasting colors.
2. Use the shape of objects to represent importance or other concept - analogies.
3. Use color to distinguish between ideas and skills.
